08 April, 2009
Lord Mayor Campbell Newman is today calling on the construction industry to step forward for the $200m job of restoring City Hall.
An industry briefing is to be held in the Ithaca Hall of City Hall at 8:30am today to equip architects, major contractors and builders with the information they need for the upcoming expressions of interest stage.
The Lord Mayor said he was pushing ahead with the largest restoration project ever undertaken by an Australian local authority, which will also create hundreds of jobs.
“The restoration of City Hall must now move ahead as a matter of urgency,” he said.
“This project will be a world-class example of sustainable design applied to a civic building with heritage significance.
“It is work that must take place in shortest time possible and also introduce commercial uses to the existing civic, community, and cultural uses, to ensure financial return.
“That’s why we need a project team that’s up to the job, with experience in delivering complex heritage projects.”
Cr Newman said Council needed professionals from construction, architecture, electrical and mechanical engineering, surveying, heritage to undertake the work.
The independent City Hall 2010 Committee reported in October 2008 that City Hall had serious structural, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and safety issues.
In March 2009, the Lord Mayor outlined the plan to save City Hall based on the report and the results of a five-month public consultation.
Alternative venues for the hundreds of community, schools and senior groups that use City Hall are being investigated to accommodate the groups during construction.
