Lord Mayor honours Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

12 June, 2012

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk will honour Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee today, by holding a commemorative tree planting in Victoria Park.

The Lord Mayor said the special milestone would be marked by planting sixty trees to signify the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s succession to the throne.

“We’ve chosen 10 fig trees and 50 hoop pines to plant, as they’re both iconic trees featured throughout our city,” Cr Quirk said.

“These trees can live for more than 100 years so will go on to represent the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee for a long time to come.

“Since the Queen’s first visit to our city in 1954 and as the only reigning monarch to have come to Australia, she has witnessed many special occasions in Brisbane.”

The trees will be planted by Brisbane teachers and school students, Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Award winners, members of the Australian Monarchist League, community groups and Brisbane City Councillors.

On March 9, 1954 Queen Elizabeth was honoured with a Civic Reception at the RNA showgrounds, which was organised by the then Lord Mayor Frank Roberts.

During her first tour of Brisbane, Queen Elizabeth II was also honoured with a Royal Ball at City Hall and a ‘Women’s Reception’ at City Hall, where more than 200 Brisbane women were invited to attend.

She has since made many more visits to Brisbane, including attending a Civic Reception out front of City Hall in 1963, visiting the Brisbane District Courts for the opening in 1970, opening City Art Gallery in City Hall in 1977, closing the Commonwealth Games in 1982 and opening Expo ’88.

Cr Quirk said the Queen’s most recent visit last year will also be fondly remembered.

“Thousands of well-wishers warmly greeted the Queen in October, as she took the time to tour the Brisbane River and view the reconstruction following the floods,” he said.

“This, along with all her other visits, will forever be part of Brisbane’s history.”
