Lord Mayor rolls out free Wi-Fi to 20 parks
04 July, 2012
Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has announced free wireless internet access in 20 new sites across the city, with the service now live.
The Lord Mayor said the Wi-Fi hotspots rollout was part of his vision for Brisbane to be a more connected and accessible city.
“The popularity of free Wi-Fi access in the City Botanic Gardens, New Farm Park and Council’s libraries has demonstrated that internet access is important to many of Brisbane’s residents and visitors,” Cr Quirk said.
“This service is part of the new world city focus that we have, where residents and visitors can access services on par with what is available in cities across the globe.
“Users will be able to surf the web or check emails while enjoying some of Brisbane’s best green spaces.”
The new sites follow a successful trial at City Botanic Gardens and New Farm Park, where Council has had nearly 10,000 people log on since October last year.
The Lord Mayor said nearly 18,000 people also logged on each month to use library Wi-Fi.
“Council has allocated $2 million to rollout the program, as well as another $413,000 for the continued Wi-Fi service in all of Council’s 33 libraries,” Cr Quirk said.
“This is in addition to the $7 million invested into upgrading and maintaining local and district parks across the city.”
Residents can locate the free Wi-Fi using signs in each area, which mark the 100 metre radius in which the service works.
Users will be given the option to connect to the free service via a window popping up on their mobile device.
