Brisbane Has Best Landscape Design in Australia

Brisbane City Council has won the 2009 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (Qld) Award for Design Excellence.
Lord Mayor Campbell Newman’s $24 million Brisbane Foreshore Parklands Project beat 40 other entries across the private and public sectors across the country to scoop the top gong.
Acting Lord Mayor and Chair for Infrastructure Graham Quirk said the Brisbane Foreshore Parklands had enhanced the waterfront villages of Sandgate, Shorncliffe, Wynnum and Manly.
“This is a hugely successful project because there’s nothing more important for Brisbane than enjoying our subtropical lifestyle with family and friends,” Cr Quirk said.
“Under the three year project, we designed and created a linear network of public outdoor spaces stretching for 6 kilometres that offer breathtaking views to Moreton Bay.
“The parklands have given people a place to meet, exercise, and entertain in a stunning, green, riverfront setting.”
Cr Quirk said the social, cultural, environmental and health benefits of the project were significant.
“The area’s sustainability received a huge boost with the use of more than 60,000 plants providing additional shade and amenity for visitors, and with the latest water efficiency measures installed,” he said.
“It’s enabled people from the local area and farther a field to reconnect with the seaside and it’s inspired a whole host of social activities and festivals keen to make use of the new local setting.”
The Deputy Mayor said the real achievement was the community participation from start to finish, making it a project designed by the community for the community.
“Every administration has a significant project they can hang their hat on, and for our first term it was the Brisbane Foreshore Parklands.”
The Brisbane Foreshore Parklands is divided into different precincts.
Moora Park at Shorncliffe and Lovers Walk and Flinders Parade at Sandgate form the northern precinct. Breakwater Park and the Wading Pool at Wynnum and Bayside Park at Manly form the eastern precinct. Lota in the south is the final part of the shoreline.
