One Book Many Brisbanes Masterclass
08 October, 2009
Brisbane City Council has joined forces with the Queensland Writers Centre to support the development of new and emerging writers in Brisbane.
The fifth One Book Many Brisbanes short story competition will include a three-day literary master class for 20 lucky writers conducted by the Queensland Writers Centre.
Chair of Families and Communities Geraldine Knapp announced the new format was the first time this level of professional development had been introduced to the competition.
“We’re thrilled to take the One Book concept to another level and expose Brisbane’s new authors to Australia’s writing elite in a ‘Masterclass’ environment,” Cr Knapp said.
“We’re looking forward to the benefits of our partnership with the Queensland Writers Centre and the results it will bring to Brisbane.
“Last year we had a different format including special guest writers - and this year is another exciting reinvention of this popular writing collection.”
For OBMB5: The Masterclass Edition, writers will complete an application and provide an outline proposal for a short 2,000 to 2,500 word Brisbane story. Entries need to showcase writing skills and a commitment to and passion for writing.
Twenty writers will then be selected to take part in a three-day ‘Masterclass’ workshop, where they will develop their proposed story – for inclusion in this year’s anthology – under the mentorship of a team of successful national and local authors and editors.
“One Book Many Brisbanes was created to promote passion for writing about our great city with all stories set in Brisbane and all entrants born in Queensland or residents of Queensland,” Cr Knapp said.
“This year’s One Book will be an even richer and deeper platform to showcase the wealth of young, new and emerging literary talent in our city.”
Entries open from Sunday, November 1 to Friday, January 8, 2009. The competition is free to enter, open to anyone over the age of 15 (with parental consent required for those under the age of 18).
Winners will be selected in January 2010 and the anthology will published in May 2010. Each of the 20 selected authors will win a cash prize of $1,000.
